Our Story

On October 6, 2025 Forma-Rest LLC came to life, showcasing our innovative solution for
violin players. By merging functionality, engineering, aesthetics and ergonomics, our
design provides the solution that players have dreamed about: A comfortable way to assist
in holding the violin to minimize neck and shoulder strain. The story started long before
Forma-Rest LLC was born. The concept was sketched and pondered upon several years
prior. Prototypes have been in use for over a year prior to final design, leading to refinements and improvements.

Many shoulder rests were tried (over 30 years), but were basically very similar in overall
performance and ergonomics.

Our early designs were continuously in use and with player feedback, improvements were
made.

Early Prototypes

Prototypes shown in this photo were in use for over a year prior to the final design. Our initial prototypes worked well and served as the basis for subsequent improvements. A few improvements were made to the early prototypes: We added more threaded holes for foot placement so that our product would fit a range of violins, from 3/4 size to oversize Maggini violins. Carbon fiber was used in place of aluminum to make the shoulder rest lighter without sacrificing strength. (112 grams for the pivoting model and 100 grams for the fixed model !!) The strength and flexibility of other materials were enhanced.

Other shoulder rests

Once you see and use either of our models, you will never look at other should rests the same. The difference isn't just visual but functional. Existing shoulder rests on the market are all basically the same in design, providing similar support for the player. Our design helps hold the violin in position with minimal effort by the player!

How to custom fit

Both versions of the Forma-Rest are provided in a pre-bent (formed) shape. This makes it easier for the player to do the final bending to get a perfect fit for their body. The materials selected are rigid enough to maintain shape under the load of playing. Please view the short video, which will help to understand how to get that perfect fit.

The effort to get a perfect fit for your body is worth the time and will provide optimal benefits going forward.
